The Climate Crisis and Solutions - BNSS

Event date: 26th November 2019 at: 7.30pm

Speaker: Mark Chivers

Mark Chivers is a trained presenter  and the UK National Volunteer Coordinator, for The Climate Reality Project, founded by former US Vice-President Al Gore to catalyse a global solution to the climate crisis. A qualified engineer,  he has worked in a variety of sectors and is currently studying part time for a BSc Honours degree in Geography and Environmental  Science (alongside his day job and climate activism!). Mark is a co-founder of Zero Carbon Dorset, a project which is aiming to identify and track the specific actions required across the county to address the climate crisis, and is working with Bournemouth University to arrange a major conference to relaunch this project in February 2020.

The presentation looks at the science and real life impacts of climate change asking ‘must we change, can we change, will we change’. It considers why we’ve progressed from ‘global warming’ to ‘climate emergency’, what technical solutions are already available, asks if we are really doing enough in the UK (particularly given the impact of places such as China and India) and concludes looking at ‘how we change’ – from actions we can take locally to the role of School Strikes and Extinction Rebellion.
